*WEEK4*
Let me just start by saying: shading is hard. And, I found out I always did it wrong. Now I get why I always hated shading and it never really worked for me.
In de video I watched to see how shading actually works, I learned that you have to build it up. Start out light and make the shades darker as you go along. This makes perfect sense. It's easier to make it darker then to make it lighter. Still this was completely new for me. And I think this is why these circles are probably the best shaded circles I've even made, even though these aren't that great either.
In the biggest circle, the highest one, I already went wrong. In the video the woman tells us she's using short strokes, making the shades darker my crossing the strokes. I started shading with long strokes, I guess as I always did. And now I saw why that isn't good. I get it now. You keep seeing the lines. It doesn't look natural. So when I was done with that one, I applied my new knowledge to the next globe. I used short strokes, crossing them and tried to go lighter as I went farther into the globe. And I saw it worked. As I was done with the first layer, I started making the shades darker, to make it more realistic, every time working back towards the lightest part. And as I got there, I went back to the outside to work on the toning and make it look even more natural. This one I'm pretty happy with. The last, smalles one isn't that great. I found I struggle most with the highlighted part of the globe. I struggle with not letting it have a perfectly visible line around it, but actually gradually working towards it. This is something I deffinately have to practice on.
But now at least I know how shading actually works and how to do it right.
Have a nice life,
Xoxo
Winnie.
*Do remember, this is a first time for me, so this isn't necessarily how it's supposed to look.*
P.S. I took all this knowledge from this video, she shows you how to draw it whilst explaining what she's doing. It worked really well for me.
What is all this about? Go to this blogpost and you can read all about the project I've started for this year!
